Newest technology: Li-Fi to substitute Wi-Fi

Chinese Scientists have given the best gift to the world by substituting Wi-Fi internet technology with novice Li-Fi technology. Li-Fi is such a unique and beneficial technology for users which will give the benefits of lighting house or working place with speedy internet connectivity same as Wi-Fi. With the help of cheap, pocket friendly Li-Fi technique, people are looking forward to the China International Industry Fair, beginning from 5 November in shanghai, where the first 10 samples of Li-Fi kits will be displayed.

The team of scientists from Fudan University, Shanghai successfully discovered the technique to speed up the internet connectivity via light waves. They have named it as Li-Fi technology which is a cheaper method to get internet connectivity through light bulbs. The term Li-Fi was given from University of Edinburgh, UK by Harald Haas. Li-Fi or Light Fidelity, means a kind of visible light communication which can supply a network of high speed communication just as Wi-Fi.

As per the report by the School of Information Science and Technology at Fudan University, the team modulated internet signals to a 1watt LED lamp. Under this 1 watt LED lamp Chi Nan, an information technology professor with Shanghais Fudan University, almost 4 computers can enjoy internet connectivity.

The highest offline speed which can be grabbed is up to 3.7 Gbps. Researchers claimed that the speed is the world’s fastest internet access speed by LED light. On an average the real time system reaches a speed maximum up to 150 Mbps. Alike radio waves, light is a kind of EM (Electro-Magnetic) waves. The switching ON and OFF of LED (Light Emitting Diode) is much quicker than human eye can detect. Thus it appears to us that the light source is continuous in nature. The main principle of transmitting and receiving internet signal through light waves is similar as for radio waves. A microchip is added to LED bulb to control the switching on and Off of light with the flow of binary data code. LED is switched ON when logic “1” is received from binary code and switched OFF when logic “0” is received.

Chi Nan, team lead of LiFi research project including scientists from the Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, revealed that the microchip embedded LED lamp is capable of producing data rates with the speed of150 Mbps which is much faster than average broadband connection in China. A successful video program was delivered between 2 computers at this speed in the experiment by the team.

If the commercial utility of Li-Fi goes successful there can be tremendous real time applications which can prove boon to the human society. Recently the demand for wireless connection to internet is increasing rapidly day by day. In this high pace growing demand the new innovation can be a good support. LED based wireless communication opens a new door in transmission of data to world.

In the upcoming future people can use this saying “where there is light, there is internet”. People could be able to use internet everywhere, wherever there is a LED light source. However according to Chi there is still much work to be done yet and much more things to explore yet.

One of the biggest questions in front of Li-Fi project team is to discover how large an LED light to install on computer or mobile phone to support data recovery. The basic pre-essential for Li-Fi is a bi-directional link through a medium so it is yet to decide the size of bulb. Another question is how to develop an applicable chip that works as a medium to transmit and receive an internet signal.

Zhu Jie, a telecom company industrialist, told that visible communication technology is much safer and emit less radiation and utilize efficient free spectrum space. But it may require long time to enter a commercial world for users and apply into real time applications.

China is working to replace regular incandescent bulbs with LED lamps which can even be used to switch ON internet connectivity. Chi feels that recent wireless transmission equipment and method use expensive approach and efficiency are low in comparison to cost. Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission are organizing the city’s universities and research institutes to carry out the research and application work of such useful technology. The chief aim of the experiments is to find out the way of cheaper light communication controlled by microchip.
